who is struggling to support his family while disabled is often the loser. Yet, in the case of General Motors v. Romein, the little guy won a big victory not
only for himself but for many others to the tune of $25 million in moneys owed for back pay for workers compensation. To some extent, the victory pertained to a
minor point in the law. It above all had to do with contract law and it seems that it really did not matter whether or not the worker was morally
right. It was after all a case that only involved a few players which were GM, the state, and Romein who was one of several workers whose compensation was cut.
Yet, in looking at the case from a broad perspective, say from the view of Marx or Durkheim, what would the case look like? Marx would likely say that the
case is a victory for the worker, and a loss for big business. To Marx, it is always the worker who is the victim and deserves to win. To Durkheim,
the case itself--no matter who won or lost--is indicative of a situation where the world has grown cold. No one cares anymore. Marx would say that the world is reduced
to work for hire with no creativity. Durkheim would say that the world was reduced to nothing but legal details with no values implemented in the mix. In the end,
they are each right to an extent, and while Romein won, it was only a small victory for the factory worker who toils for low wages and does not share
