the theme of greed, and its impact upon morality. In this way, Fitgerald is making some important commentaries on society and upon human nature. In this story, Percy Washington invites his school friend John Unger home with him for a vacation. Percy and his family live in the hills of Montana, and just happen to be the wealthiest family in the world because they live on a huge diamond mine. The only problem is, they are the only ones who know this, and therefore, any of the friends that the Washington children bring home to visit must be killed so that no one on the "outside" finds out about the mines or the wealth of the Washington family. Fortunately for John however, he ends up falling in love with Kismine, who is Percys sister, and so she warns him about his impending doom. In the end, John is able to rescue both of the Washington girls when planes start circling the home. Percys father ends up killing the pilots while imploding the mountain upon which they live, only to reveal the worlds largest diamond. It is clear in this story that the greed of the Washingtons is out-of-control. Mr. Washington doesnt want anyone to find out about his diamonds or his wealth for fear that it could be taken away from him. Whats even more startling however, is the lengths this family is willing to go to in order to prevent anyone from finding out about their wealth, and thereby threatening that wealth.
