from one continent to another in pursuit of self-indulgence and became to forever symbolize the era of drunken decadence and its consequences. Zelda went insane while Scott squandered his
literary genius and imbibed himself into an early grave. The generation of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald was described by author Gertrude Stein as "lost," vainly trying to recapture the
youth that had been snatched from them by World War I. So entwined were they that it was impossible for F. Scott Fitzgerald to separate his tortured life from
art, to the point where it difficult for him or his readers to differentiate between the two. His short story, "Babylon Revisited," first published in 1931, revealed the author
and all of his inner anguish, in the characterization of Charlie Wales, and poignantly speculated on what becomes of a dissolute person when the party finally comes to an end.
The Babylon to which Fitzgerald referred was an ancient city where revelries and debauchery reigned supreme. Paris had a similarly depraved reputation during the 1920s, where many Americans
burned the candle at both ends, mistakenly believing that the good times would last forever. Charlie Wales and his wife, Helen, the fictional alter egos of Scott and Zelda
Fitzgerald, had acquired a bad reputation in Paris. When they werent on drinking binges, they were flirting with members of the opposite sex. Drinking and cavorting for days
without sleep took its toll on Helen Wales, and after her death, Charlie Wales was forced to grow up. Like many Americans, he lost his fortune in the stock
market crash of 1929, and in an attempt to recoup his lost fortune, Charlie relocated to Prague, surrendering guardianship of his daughter, Honoria, to Helens sister Marion Peters and her
