Gilgamesh of Uruk, embarks upon a journey that is both physical and metaphysical. He is part God but the human aspects of his character are deeply flawed. He
must travel a difficult path in order to find himself and establish an inner peace which has always eluded him. Gilgamesh comes close to doing so when he meets
his primitive counterpart, Enkidu, whose wisdom and compassion tempers his own violence and avarice. However, this friendship is unfortunately cut short when Enkidu becomes ill and dies. Gilgamesh
is inconsolable and seeks to spare himself the misery of Enkidus suffering by discovering the secret of immortality. He believes that through eternal life, he will be able to
successfully "bring back his friend, lift him out of his indifference to human life" (Young-Mason 347). Gilgamesh hears the story of
Utnapishtim, a man not unlike the biblical Noah, who along with his wife, has been protected from the effects of a catastrophic flood and have been granted immortality by the
gods. In Tablet IX, Gilgamesh sets off to find Utnapishtim, sailing across the perilous "sea of death," and in Tablet X, finally reaches his destination (Young-Mason 347). Gilgamesh
eagerly encourages Utnapishtim to share with him this timeless secret of the gods that will enable him to cheat death through everlasting life. Utnapishtim appears willing to oblige the
kings request. He decides to test his visitor "to see if he is deserving of immortality" by demanding he stay awake for seven days (Kane 126). Gilgamesh quickly
agrees to the terms but realizing that humans will deceive to get what they want Utnapishtim has his wife place loaves of bread for Gilgamesh to eat, one for each
