him. The following paper analyzes parts of Chapter IV as it relates to Maggie and her brothers control over her. Analysis of Eliots The Mill on the Floss
From the beginning of the novel one sees how devoted Maggie is to her brother. It is, however, in chapter IV that one can truly see what lengths she will
go to in order to please her brother and do what he says is right. She has fallen in love with Philip who everyone believes will marry another, Lucy. Maggies
brother knows that she truly cares for Philip but Maggie has already decided that she will take a job elsewhere so that they do not have to be together. Her
brother, however, has no faith in her or her determination, telling her "I have no confidence in you, Maggie. You would be led away to do anything" (Eliot Chapter IV).
She is really bothered by this and tells him so, in a very docile way one could say: "Have I not done and borne everything as well as I could?
And I kept my word to you--when--when----My life has not been a happy one, any more than yours" (Eliot Chapter IV). In this one can see that she has
very likely sacrificed much of her own life, and her own happiness, for what he believes is right. She follows the words and demands of Tom no matter how she
may feel. And yet he is a very patriarchal sort of figure, perhaps symbolizing the society in general, for he really has no faith in her no matter what she
