Rita is the main character and is initially pretty narrow minded. She is of the opinion that is she can increase her intelligence she will be able to change
her class distinction and thus better her life. She is looking to be set free through learning more and becoming worldlier. She became a hairstylist in an effort
to try to promote herself from lower class to middle class, but she still is not satisfied. Rita wants to become more than middle class and thinks that taking
a college course will help her. DISCUSSION Rita feels that simply by reading books and changing the way that she dresses, she will be able to change her class.
The main focus of the file is Rita trying to achieve this change. Change is difficult due to the barriers that she encounters and changes that do take
place affect Rita in both positive and negative ways. As a result, Rita is faced with trying to figure out what is best and how to find a balance
in her life. The film demonstrates how education can influence a persons life. The other main character in the film is Frank, who becomes an unwitting tutor
for Rita. The result is that not only does Frank tutor Rita, but Franks learns from Rita as well. Initially Rita is portrayed as a bright, bubbly, boisterous character.
She comes forcefully through the door, swearing and immediately all attention is drawn to her. Not knowing exactly how she should act, she uses the bold, loud manner
to hide her insecurity. Obviously, she knows very little of how to behave in formal interviews. A person in her situation would normally appear shy, but Rita is anything
