haunting and disturbing. It is a horror tale that only comes from the legendary pen of Poe and as such has many different elements that combine to create such a
haunting tale. The following paper examines and analyzes some of the elements such as narrator, conflict, setting and language. Analysis of Edgar Allen Poes The Cask of Amontillado
In this tale the story is told in first person and this individual is clearly disgruntled, to say the least, with his impending victim. He states, "THE thousand injuries of
Fortunato I had borne as I best could ; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not
suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat" (Poe). This is truly the best explanation the reader will get as to why the narrator is going to brick him
up in his wine cellar. This makes him a very dynamic personality because he is so incensed but never really explains to the reader why. He is all but stoic
in the manner in which he goes about his deed, seemingly presenting himself as a gentleman although the reader, especially the reader familiar with the work of Poe, knows that
he is anything but a gentleman or stoic. Through this first person narrative the reader is really made to feel as though the narrator is speaking to the reader,
and explaining all the details of the events that unfold. A first person narrative truly pulls the reader in and Poe does this very powerfully through such insights as "He
turned towards me, and looked into my eyes with two filmy orbs that distilled the rheum of intoxication" (Poe). It offers a very personal look at events and thus makes
