resonated in the minds and hearts of countless immigrants who have traveled across land and sea in search of success and prosperity. However, as F. Scott Fitzgerald told us
in his 1926 literary classic, The Great Gatsby, the appearance of what constitutes the American Dream, and its reality can be completely different entities. While most chasers of this
dream are initially focused on its pursuit, they discover that once it is seemingly in their grasp, it looks far different up close than from a distance. The contrast
between appearances and reality manifests itself in The Great Gatsby as a "contrast between East and West" (The Great Gatsby). Once upon a time, after the Eastern colonies
had been settled, the promise of gold and riches in San Francisco urged citizens to pack up their belongings, and "Go West." The West was raw and uncharted territory
that, in the minds of dreamers, was the embodiment of innocence (The Great Gatsby). However, once there, wealth was in concentrated in the hands of the few, while the
many considered themselves lucky to make ends meet. The glitter of gold could be blinding, as appearances were freely exchanged with reality. In The Great Gatsby, this was
illustrated in the frequent comparisons between the Long Island sections of East Egg and West Egg. As narrator Nick Carraway, a West Egg resident and Midwest transplant noted, the
view was quite different from one side to the other. Nick remarked, "It was a matter of choice that I should have rented a house in one of the
strangest communities in North America. It was on that slender riotous island which extends itself due east of New York and where there are, among other natural curiosities, two
