paper examines political intrigue, tragedy, supernatural, roles of men and women, and historical relevancy in 4 different plays, or productions. The stories discussed are Antigones "The Oedipus Trilogy," Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnicks "Fiddler on the Roof," Shakespeares "Hamlet," and Anton Chekhovs "The Cherry Orchard." Political Intrigue Political intrigue can take place on many different levels and can be obvious or it can be incredibly subtle. For example, in the cases of "Fiddler on the Roof" and "The Cherry Orchard" the stories are not necessarily involved with political intrigue, but the characters are the victims of political intrigue. In "Fiddler on the Roof" the family is the victim of Russia and prejudices against the Jews. In "The Cherry Orchard" we have individuals in Russia who are victims of a political system that involves serfs. In Hamlet and Oedipus story, however, we are presented with political figures who possess power in one way or another. But, each is attempting to do the right thing through the use of their political position. Tragedy Tragedy also occurs in many different forms. In Hamlet the tragedy is that Hamlet attempts to do the right thing to avenge his fathers death, only to have a few people die along the way who had nothing to do with the death of his father. When Hamlet does figure out what is right for him, in terms of addressing the killer in public, he ends up dying. The tragedy in Oedipus case comes through fate or prophecy. No matter what Oedipus does he is doomed to fulfill that prophecy and that is a tragedy. In Chekhovs story the tragedy comes on more subtle levels and is generally reliant upon the reader.
