and not-so-subtle overtones of death. This story is fascinating because it can be understood on so many levels. On the surface, this is the story of a mysterious
town and a strange guest who arrives asking all kinds of questions. But on a deeper level, this is a story about good and evil, right and wrong, and
the unholy versus the forces of good. The setting itself is a large part of the mystery. The guest
is being taking to the "unholy" town on a horse and carriage, and the driver, who speaks mainly German, is unable to fully explain why the village they are headed
to is such a dreaded destination. The horses themselves were terrified, which is a very telling sign and a brilliant addition by the author to indicate just how innate
the terror was in the situation. It is interesting to note how the guest proceeds despite the pleas of his
German-speaking carriage driver, and this presents an interesting contrast for readers. The fact that the guest is almost flippant about the warnings of Johann creates even more suspense when
he decides to proceed anyway. Clearly, the dark, cold, unforgiving surroundings that encapsulate the guest as his driver leaves him symbolize the dark, cold, unforgiving surroundings upon which
he embarks. In this way, the reader is prepared somewhat for what awaits the guest, just be reading the details of the environment.
