Finchers visual mood piece has an aura reminiscent of Raymond Chandlers detective novels of the 1940s, and laments the rampant crime which permeates the gritty streets of Big City, U.S.A. The dark tone is conveyed throughout Se7en in a myriad of shadows and shades of gray as two detectives struggle to find a serial killer who is punishing seven deadly sinners within a seven-day time period. The nameless city, which resembles New York, is comprised of killers, drug addicts, pedophiles and wheeler-dealers, where momentary pleasures are actively sought. It is this ugly reality that homicide detective, Lt. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) longs to retreat from -- and into his safe, erudite world of Chaucer and Dantes "Inferno." Somerset is counting the days until his retirement, and taking his place is a cocky and hot-tempered young detective named David Mills (Brad Pitt). In the opening scene of Se7en, screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker describes Detective Somerset this way: "SOMERSET, 45, stands in one corner of this small, second-story room. He looks over the ceiling, looks down at the worn wooden floors, looks at the peeling wallpaper. He walks to the center of the room, continues his study, taking his time. He halts, turns to one wall where the current wallpaper is torn away to reveal flowery wallpaper underneath. Somerset goes to this wall and runs his finger across one of the pale, red roses which decorates the older paper. He pushes the grime away, brings the rose out more clearly" (2001). Clearly, he is a man who appreciates the beauty of the world, and will do anything to restore it. Somerset also takes his time, slowly and deliberately studies every detail. ...
