Is the market going to crash or will it enjoy its current bull run for a few more years? Other things to consider are industry trends and specific events in
the history of a company one is interested in. However, when buying the stock of tried and true companies, firms which will be here long past the investors intention to
stay in the market, volatility is not a worry. Those who invest for the long haul are seldom concerned with chance fluctuations or significant fall outs. They know that their
company will be valuable and even be able to withstand a crash. Companies like R.J. Reynolds, IBM and Coca-Cola are a few of these companies whose names are American as
apple pie and whose stocks are often considered safe. But some like to trade, or quickly buy and sell some of these stocks. They are concerned with how it
will do over the short term. In evaluating Coca-Cola stock, such an investor will want to know how it might do over the next six months or so. In trying
to make projections, it is prudent to not only look at company history, strategy and expansion possibilities but financial trends are also valuable. In fact, everything should be considered in
projecting how Coke might do in the next several months. In viewing a three year trend, it becomes clear that Coke fluctuates quite a bit but remains in the same
general price range ("Coke" PG). Its beta is .05 (PG). This is indicative of low volatility. Its lowest point was at 39 during the winter/spring of 1997 (PG). It quickly
climbed to 70 before January of 1998 would arrive at which time the stock dipped to about 61 (PG). In the summer of 1998 it rose to 75 (PG).
