Specifically considered are the men themselves and who they were, where they came from and why they joined the fight; the job of a common foot soldier; why Rhodes and Watkins chose to write about their wartime experiences; how each was affected by the war, particularly its death and destruction; how Watkins felt about the Southern cause and the war; why these books are important to historians and evaluates whether or not one has more value than the other since one was written while the war was going on, while the other was written twenty years later. it was an event that would never be forgotten. Those young men who fought on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line and lived to tell about it had entered
the war as idealists but left the battlefield as realists. The Civil War had been their coming of age from childhood to adulthood, and it had been, quite literally,
a trial by fire, in the form of gunfire. Although both the Union soldiers and the Confederate rebels fervently believed their side was right and were willing to die
to prove it, they both shared experiences that essentially differed only by the color of the uniforms they wore. Elisha Hunt
Rhodes book, All for the Union, a title which described the commitment of he and his fellow soldiers, since their fighting only netted them a mere $13 a month, was
based on his personal Civil War journal and on a series of letters he composed during the war, in which he actively participated as a foot soldier for the duration.
It details Rhodes impressive ascent through the infantry ranks, beginning first as a na?ve private and ending his service as a lieutenant colonel. Rhodes had seen all the
combat there was to see in the North, and detailed his first-hand accounts of the campaigns waged from Bull Run to the Battle of Appomattox. The major points of
