is Ibo for people of the forest) in the nation now known as Nigeria just prior to the arrival of the white man in Africa. It is an epic
in the classical Greek tradition, and explores the conflicts of good vs. evil, black vs. white and tradition vs. change. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe resurrected a long-dead way
of life, and thoughtfully considered what may still be learned from that historic struggle between old-world customs and the new-world changes. The tradition of the Ibo tribal culture is
represented by the novels chief protagonist, Okonkwo, a proud man who has "brought honor to his village" (7). He is a warrior whose fierce physical prowess hides his "fear
of failure and of weakness" (16). Okonkwo spends his life trying to distance himself from a father he considers effeminate and lazy. He takes pride in tribal rituals,
because through their mastery, he can emerge in a culture that ranks brawn over brains. He is suspicious and threatened by change because by maintaining the status quo, he
is ensuring his own self-importance. Yet, in the back of his mind there is the nagging fear that Okonkwo and his people are a slowly-dying breed. Prior to his
period of decline, Okonkwo had held a position of reverence in Umuofia for his impressive skills as a warrior. His friend Obierika once described him as "one of the
greatest men in Umuofia" (191). At a very early age, Okonkwo had achieved the status of local legend, as noted by the narrator, who remarked, "Okonkwo was well known
