wild pirates and inhuman atheistical devils were infernally cheering him on with their curses;- when all these conceits had passed through his brain, Ahabs brow was left gaunt and ribbed,
like the black sand beach after some stormy tide had been gnawing it, without being able to drag the firm thing from its place".
In this passage, Ahabs hatred is evident. In fact, one could easily conclude that Ahab is indeed consumed with hatred. In this way, Melville relates a
very spiritual message, shrouded in the form of Ahabs feelings for a whale. Because this whale, Moby Dick, was responsible for taking Ahabs leg in a past incident, Ahab
has since been filled with hatred and contempt for this whale, and has vowed revenge. It is interesting to realize
that Moby Dick is indeed just a whale, and was of course acting on entirely natural instincts. It would not be possible for Moby Dick to realize beyond the
moment of hurting Ahab that any vendetta or revenge was directed at him. So clearly, we can conclude the Ahabs vigilant hatred is the result of some other deep-seated
issue within himself, and in this way we realize that this hatred doesnt serve to destroy the whale, but actually ends up destroying him.
