a very humorous book in many ways it is also a very distressing work in relationship to the realities of WWII. It is also a work that has been explicated
and analyzed from many perspectives due to its intricate nature. With that in mind the following paper analyzes the novel Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. Analysis of Catch
22 Many would well argue that the entire premise of the book is as follows: "Using satire, black humour and seemingly undefeatable logic,
the book argues that war is insane, that the military is insane, and that, quite probably, modern life itself is insane too" (Owens). And this insanity can well be connected
to the title itself, a catch phrase that has become part of American language. A catch 22 is essentially a condition wherein
a person finds themselves in a position where they are darned if they do and darned if they dont. It is a no win situation no matter what they choose.
It comes from the Catch-22 in the novel that pertains to the military rule which is seen in the following excerpt: "There was only one catch and that was Catch-22,
that specified that a concern for ones own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and
could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr
