This paper analyzes an article about child abuse and its effects. Analysis of the Article The article I found is entitled "Children exposed to domestic violence: Psychological
considerations for health care practitioners." Its by Suzanne G. Martin and appeared in Holistic Nursing Practice in 2002. (Its surprisingly difficult, given all the material available on child
abuse, to find specific articles on certain aspects of the subject.) First, a point: Child neglect is not the same as child abuse, but for purposes of this analysis
I think its fair to say that neglect is a form of abuse. It is a "passive" way of abusing a child; it doesnt require the abuser to actually
do anything, simply not do things, such as feeding and bathing the child. The Martin article reviews "the psychological impact of exposure to domestic violence on child development"
(Martin, 2002). This is almost exactly what we want: an answer to the question of what happens over time when children are abused. The article attempts to
answer how family violence affects "a childs perception of the world and relationships with others" (Martin, 2002). It also considers what kinds of coping mechanisms such children develop, and
what protects children who are exposed to abuse (Martin, 2002). The article begins with a formal definition of domestic violence, one given by the American Psychological Association: domestic
violence is "a pattern of abusive behaviors including a wide range of physical, sexual and psychological mistreatment used by one person in an intimate relationship with another to gain power
unfairly or maintain that persons misuse of power, control and authority" (Martin, 2002). This definition is particularly important with regard to child abuse, because of its mention of power.
