has described it as the definitive moment of his life, his personal and creative rite of passage. He began thinking about American society and what it had meant to
the countless immigrants who arrived on its shores, seeking better lives. The American Dream, as it came to be called, was based primarily on the capitalist notion that more
was better, and that money could buy happiness. This was the primary focus of Millers dramatic masterpiece, Death of a Salesman, which was first performed in 1949. The
play not only defined Miller as one of the American theaters most innovative talents, but also continues to define American drama. It remains a gauge for which all subsequent
morality plays are measured. Death of a Salesman is the story of Willy Loman, as his name implies, the quintessential "low
man" on the socioeconomic totem pole. He is a tired, old salesman who refuses to believe that the materialistic success which characterizes the American dream is not beyond his
grasp. His father and older brother Ben abandoned him early in his childhood, so Willy devotes much of his life trying achieve the acceptance which has always been denied
him. His long-suffering wife Linda bolsters Willy with her quiet strength. She allows him to groom sons Biff and Happy to excel as he never could, but so
far, they have turned out to be a disappointment. In order to hide their inadequacies, Biff and Happy will lie, steal, cheat, whatever it takes. They are both
