family dreaming of more. They are a family of several people all living under one roof and seeking their dreams in one way or another. Surrounding this struggle is the
fact that a check will be arriving, a life insurance check from the death of the patriarch of the family. Everyone in the play has a different dream, a different
motive, a different vision of where the check can take them as a group or as an individual. And, within this struggle to compromise is a sense of mystery. The
following paper examines the mystery of what will happen with the check as it involves the motives, means, and other elements relating to the individual characters in Hansberrys "A Raisin
in the Sun." The Mystery The primary mystery is that which involves the check. At first we are unsure about what the check is for, but then we
learn it is a life insurance check. The family is incredibly tense and impatient and hopeful about the arrival of the check and yet we begin to see that each
person has their own ideas about how the money should be spent. This presents us with the mystery of what the final outcome will be. We wonder who will win
out, and if there will actually be a winner in the end. Most viewers will hope that Mama will be the one to decide. She is the woman who seems
most content with life itself, understanding its struggles and always rising about them. And, after all, it was her husband who died and as such it is her right to
