Depression and the unwillingness to give up hope that the American Dream was still possible, as the world is seen through the eyes of two California ranch hands, the simple-minded
Lennie, and his friend and protector, George. For actor Gary Sinise, Of Mice and Men wasnt simply required high school reading. It represented his idol, John Steinbeck, at
the peak of his talents. After an acclaimed performance as Tom Joad in the Broadway version of The Grapes of Wrath, Sinise so impressed Steinbecks widow, Elaine, that she
granted permission to allow him to direct his own screen adaptation of his favorite novel (Morsberger, 1993). Sinise then convinced friend and fellow actor John Malkovich they should reprise
the roles of George and Lennie they had originally portrayed in a 1980 stage production in a 1992 (Morsberger, 1993). The result was a film that pays homage to
the novel and the Salinas, California landscape Steinbeck lovingly recreated in his works, masterfully captured by cinematographer Kenneth MacMillan (Morsberger, 1993). In his determination to remain true to Steinbecks
vision of what Of Mice and Men should be, Mark Ishams musical score sets the proper mood but is not intrusive, and period scenes depicting Salinas and Soledad are reconstructed
"in meticulous... detail" (Murray, 2003; Morsberger, 1993, p. 128). The central focus of the novel and film is exactly where it should be, on George and Lennie, who live one
day at a time, drift from one job to the next, and like many of their Depression era contemporaries, hold onto "a dream of owning a little house of their
very own" (Casey, 1995). Although the actors performances and Malkovich is about four inches taller than Sinise, his Lennie does not dwarf George in a way that Steinbeck emphasized
