a culture unto themselves, but at the same time their assessment of themselves and their race are constantly defined and refined through the consciousness of the white culture that bought
the African Americans and essentially controls their destiny and identity. The following paper presents a tutorial regarding analyzing Du Bois work concerning double-consciousness. Double-Consciousness Du Bois, first off,
can be seen as incredibly valid. When analyzing his work the reader, if they are white and not from any ethnic group that has experienced oppression in the United States,
must put themselves in the position of Du Bois and all African Americans to truly understand what he is saying, and how what he is saying is incredibly valid. As
a white person the reader could not possibly truly understand how it would feel and thus must assume he represents his people. And, because a white person has not experienced
the double-consciousness does not mean it does not exist. In analyzing his work it is very important to truly look at the history of the African Americans in the
nation. They were brought to this nation by force. They were abused and belittled and put in positions where they had little left but some small inkling of hope in
the face of brutal beatings, starvation, rape and the inability to even become educated to name but a few of their conditions. They were given the nations religion and forced
to abide. All other cultures in this nation came here of free will, came here for the promise and freedom the land possessed. The African American did not and this
plays a very important part in analyzing Du Bois work. If the reader understands this then they can begin to understand that as the position of African Americans changed
