Discussion The prompt for this essay is this: the paper is to be an analysis of a "current technological fad such as cell phones." The word "fad" implies something frivolous
that will disappear in a very short time; it also implies a certain degree of uselessness. None of these criteria appear to apply to cell phones, which have been around
for over 20 years and which have proven to be so useful, and so popular, that it seems unlikely they will ever disappear. It might be better then to simply
consider the pros and cons of this piece of technology. One source argues that the benefits of cell phones far outweigh the negatives, particularly in developing countries. For instance, in
Kinshasa, Congo, "cell phones have revolutionized the way of life" (Cell phone benefits outweigh negatives, 2006-hereafter "Cell phone benefits, 2006"). Until cell phones were introduced, people who wanted to talk
to their family members had to travel miles by foot, often facing numerous dangers on the way (Cell phone benefits, 2006). Today they can use cell phones to stay in
touch, eliminating the need for a long and dangerous trek (Cell phone benefits, 2006). Of course, cell phone usage is usually much more mundane, but still valuable. If someones car
breaks down he is no longer stranded-he can call for help (Cell phone benefits, 2006). If hes running late for an appointment, he can notify the other person and reschedule,
thus saving time for everyone (Cell phone benefits, 2006). People are no longer tied down while they wait for phone calls; instead, they remain mobile and can get more done,
increasing productivity (Cell phone benefits, 2006). There are negatives as well, though, but most seem to fall into the category of "annoyances" rather than serious problems (Cell phone benefits, 2006).
