the same diseases and conditions that are more prevalent to their shared background, such as hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell anemia and HIV. The stark difference in their respective health
knowledge, however, indicates a significant separation where social and academic education is concerned, as well as the fact that Kimberly works in the health field and has constant interaction with
healthcare knowledge. Treatment of sickness varies considerably between the two women; although they both seek a physicians advice when they are sick, they also apply strikingly different home remedies
for such maladies as the common cold, nausea and intestinal parasites. Family stands at the focal point of each womans existence, providing guidance, support, nurturing and a general sense of
belonging. Kimberly is single while Kine is married, and it is apparent that Kimberly spends more time by herself than does Kine by virtue of living alone. She
is not lonely, however, with a number of siblings and other extended family who are always available for companionship and comfort. Kine has her husband, children, sisters and other
extended family, as well, who provide the missing link to her cultural roots back in Africa. While she has cultivated friends during her 10 years in the United States,
she has remained within the comfort of those who share her historical and cultural roots; Kimberly acknowledged a division in societal levels with regard to her peers, yet it did
not preclude them from gathering socially. Neither woman appears to have any conceived notions about culture and competence, both answering how they would accept a medical practitioner of any cultural
