The truth, however, is that they occupy positions American workers turn down as being beneath them. Caught in this Catch-22, undocumented aliens like Juan must take whatever work they find and endure whatever inequitable treatment their supervisors dole out, inasmuch as their illegal status precludes any protection under the law. Whether it is a sign of the times or merely a progression of economic factors, another point Juans interview brings out is how a majority of todays undocumented immigrants are "less educated and poorer" (Sassen, 1994, p. 50) than those who came before them. The media have latched onto this particular aspect, branding them useless and nothing more than a burden upon American taxpayers. Much of the country is of the opinion that these illegal aliens who enter the states and earn wages without paying taxes add little if anything to the "quality of the labor forces or civil society" (Sassen, 1994, p. 50). Typically, economic opportunity abounds for immigrants who seek out the fulfillment of American prosperity, affording them more productive and higher paid positions than their home countries could ever begin to realize; in Juans case, however, just the opposite is true. Immigrant supporters deny the claims that illegals are worthless, stating that there exist several benefits to their being in the country.
