The automotive sector itself is involved in manufacturing automobiles, light trucks, motor vehicle body manufacturers, and parts and supplies manufacturers (Automotive Online, 2007). There are five companies that dominate the world in automobile manufacturing: General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Toyota, Daimler Chrysler and Volkswagen AG (Automotive Online, 2007). They dominate because their products can be found in just about every country in the world (Automotive Online, 2007). The overall and general drivers of this industry are many: foreign investments, i.e., building and operating plants in other countries lead to rapid growth of that company and an economic boost to the host country; these companies are consistently investing in research and development activities to develop better, safer and more fuel-efficient automobiles, the industry supports numerous other industries, such as oil and gas, petroleum plastic, rubber, steel, glass, iron, paints and transportation industries; as standards of living increase, so does the demand for automobiles, and the industry provides millions and millions of jobs across the world (Automotive Online, 2007). Dramatic changes have challenged the automotive industry, including General Motors (GM) (Automotive Online, 2007). One of those changes is the increased viability of nations like China and India; as they become more and more present in the global market, their products will bring even more competition to the existing leaders (Automotive Online, 2007). In the United States, two brands lead the pack: Toyota and Honda (Allen, 2007).
