much as it challenges its protagonist, a medieval detective, to solve crimes. This paper analyzes the book. Discussion Umberto Eco, who wrote the novel, is, among other things, a medievalist,
university lecturer, philosopher, literary critic and semiotician. This last is particularly important with regard to this novel. Semiotics is generally thought of as the study of signs and symbols, and
the meanings people derive from them. But the meaning of signs can depend on context as well. For example, to a farmer a dark cloud can mean rain for the
crops; while to a superstitious person, that same cloud might symbolize the coming of evil forces. Same cloud, different interpretation. That certainly holds true in the novel, where signs and
the interpretation of them is all important. On one level, the story is a classic detective novel: in 1327, a Franciscan monk, William of Baskerville, is sent to an unnamed
monastery on a "delicate diplomatic mission" (Rushing, 2005, p. 120). The literary allusions and connections begin immediately: "Baskerville" is of course the most famous case of possibly the most famous
detective in history, Sherlock Holmes. The sharp reader will realize immediately that puzzles and mysteries will be found not only in the plot, but throughout the novel in its structure
and in the references Eco brings in. The reader thus becomes aware that the novel is working on several levels; as a detective story, as a book about detective stories
and how theyre structured, as homage to other detectives and literary works, and as a work that places strong emphasis on symbols and signs, and how they relate to each
