it considers the slogan "Winners Never Quit, Quitters Never Win" with regard to gender, race, class, etc., in the film. Discussion As noted, the film is predictable from beginning to
end. The new coach, whom no one likes or trusts, takes over a losing team and with the help of an equally unlikely partner, transforms it into a winner. Along
the way there is the obligatory love interest, along with the montage of the practice games, the gradual build up of the winning streak, and finally the win that brings
home the state championship. Its the typical underdog story, told the way Hollywood always tells such underdog stories. So why is it so wildly popular? Part of the appeal is
that its a true story. The name of the school and team have been changed-there were no "Hickory Hoosiers," but a little school named Milan did in fact rise from
almost nowhere to win the state championship in 1954 ("The Real Hoosiers"). Star Gene Hackman has said that the truth of the story resonates with the viewers and that, in
part, is why the film is so successful (Short and Short). In addition, writer and Angelo Pizzo wanted the story to be about people, not just a sports film
(Short and Short). In Pizzos opinion, the central theme of the film is "redemption"; he says the film is "about people who overcome obstacles and are able to move from
