Therefore, the Pharaoh states that they should "deal shrewdly" with the Hebrews (Exo. 1:10). This consists of forced labor on building projects, labor in the fields, and killing the male babies. It is the Egyptian fear of the expanding Israelite population that places Moses, the infant son of a Levite family in danger. The story of Moses being saved by being placed in a basket of reeds and cast into the river, where he is rescued by a daughter of the Pharaoh follows. Although Moses is raised in the royal court, his loyalty lies with his own people and he kills an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew and is forced to flee Egypt (Exo. 1:15). In this land, Moses is befriended by Jethro and marries one of his daughters. II. Chapter 3-4. The call of Moses to do Gods will. This marks a new direction in the life of Moses as he learns about his destiny. Moses had made a life for himself as a shepherd, tending the flocks of his father-in-law, Jethro, a priest of Midian (Exo. 3:1). An angel of the Lord calls Moses from a burning bush and informs him of his holy mission, and his destiny, which is rescue his people and lead them to a land "flowing with milk and honey" (Exo. 3:17). In chapter 4, Moses argues that he is unworthy for such a task. He emphasizes that he is no one special, that he is a poor speaker and that no one will believe him.
