as it is today, but it does seem to have been a source of concern for decades. This paper summarizes and analyzes three articles about the region. Discussion The first
article is a series of letters between Sharif Hussein and British official A.H. McMahon. The correspondence between the two took place during the period 14 July 1915 - 10 March
1916. Before and during the First World War, the European powers were interested in attempting to influence the various Middle Eastern nations, either to support their war efforts or to
attack their enemies interests in the region. This particular series of letters details Britains attempt to win the Arabs to their side. It also inadvertently sets the stage for the
ongoing conflict over the existence of Palestine. The question arises because McMahon promised Sharif Hussein "Arab control over the whole of areas to be liberated from Turkey," with the exception
of an area west of Syria; that area was never defined exactly ("McMahon-Hussein Correspondence, 1915-1916"). Not only that, but no maps were ever published, and the origins of the
suggested boundaries remain obscure, but "may have had their origin in the instructions of Sir Edward Grey that Damascus, Homs, Hama and Allepo should be under Arab control" ("McMahon-Hussein
