of anabolic steroids has become commonplace in many segments of our modern society. Some of this usage is, of course, legitimate. Other steroid use, however, occurs outside medical
supervision and revolves around the sole desire to improve physical appearance or performance. While in the past it was primarily males, particularly teenage males who turned to anabolic steroids,
there is now a growing following of women who are using the drugs to not only improve their physical appearance and lose weight but also to improve their sexual libido
(Bee, 2003). Such utilization, whether by male or female, is all too often associated with definitive risks and side effects, a fact which unfortunately is seldom successful in deterring
those who are bent on "improving" their bodies yet one which should be taken into consideration when considering the use of anabolic steroids.
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are derived from testosterone and function in the stimulus of the production of cellular protein (Kruskemper, 1968). These drugs can interfere with many of the natural processes,
however. In part, they can: "interfere with normal hormone production, causing a kind of
drug-induced sex change -- men can become feminized, with shrunken testicles and growth of breasts, while women might grow body hair and develop lower voices. Both genders can experience male-pattern
baldness and acne" (Manning, 2002). Additional adverse affects can include changes in personality, even "homicidal
rage, mania and delusion" (Manning, 2002). Long term impacts can include heart attacks, stroke, increased cholesterol levels and liver tumors (Manning, 2002, Williams, 1997). Obviously, a number of
