confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense" ("Amendment VI to the
U.S. Constitution," 2007). What does this mean exactly? The U.S. Constitution, by virtue of the sixth amendment affords a person certain liberties, including the right to a speedy trial
and to a public trial ("Amendment VI to the U.S. Constitution," 2007). In other words, the state cannot postpone the trial too long or the defendant can move to dismiss.
This is for the protection of citizens as the law does not allow the state to put the suspect behind bars for an inordinate amount of time while awaiting trial.
The right to a public trail seems to be for the benefit of both the defendant and the public. The public has a right to know that the judicial system
is working well but the defendant also has a right for everyone to watch to again, make sure that justice is done. This is the right that some reporters claim
allows for cameras in the courtroom. Certainly, even if cameras are not allowed by the judge, the press cannot be completely excluded from the courtroom during a public trial.
Another right is to have an impartial jury ("Amendment VI to the U.S. Constitution," 2007). Here, each defendant will have counsel and their attorneys will be able to eliminate
people who they feel might be biased. Through this tug of war process with the jury pool, it is hoped that the end result is an unbiased jury. Another right
