Many people are frightened of the religion of Voodoo, or they feel it is an evil religion, focusing on demons or just evil elements and desires. However, one cannot judge
a religion, or even make an assumption about a religion without knowing the religion itself. This entails researching many things regarding the religion. With that in mind the following paper
provides an overview of the religion as it involves a bit of history, the beliefs and some of the rituals. It should be noted that, as with many religions, the
beliefs and practices are often kept somewhat secret and as such the information presented here is clearly not all inclusive regarding beliefs and practices. An Overview of the
Religion of Voodoo When most people think of Voodoo they more often than not likely think of New Orleans Voodoo. As one author notes, "New Orleans Voodoo is a hybrid
Voodoo, reflective of the eclectic culture that is uniquely New Orleans" (Alvarado). Voodoo in New Orleans can be dated back over two centuries and the religion is also considered to
be around 7,000 years old. However, Voodoo is also the religion practiced by many people in Haiti. Much of the information that is available seems to essentially lump the two
together in many ways, although New Orleans has adapted the religion to incorporate Catholic saints and icons as well as Catholic rituals.
