that are covered by Medicare. One of the most noticeable changes to the DRG system under the new MS-DRG system is the addition of 216 new groups from the 538
DRGs to the now 754 MS-DRGs. This paragraph helps the student by presenting a summary overview of the MS-DRG system and the challenges it presents. The way the new
MS-DRG works is by grouping patients with similar systems and characteristics such as costs, age, and medical procedures. Payment is then devised by taking the average costs of the individual
group. Along with this change comes a complete overhaul of the ICD-9. With more than 10,000 ICD-9 diagnosis codes the reclassification presents an incredible change that is sure to be
