Richard Helms is one of the more memorable twentieth
century characters in US government. Helms had a long history working for the US government. The most notable chapter of that history was his heading up the Central
Intelligence Agency between 1966 and 1973. Helms role in international affairs remains unmatched. His actions in the 1960s helped shape the course of American history in more than
one respect. During his time heading up the CIA the agency was associated with plotting and supporting a Chilean coup and the overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba. These
plots were complex and far reaching in their impacts. The CIA was even believed by some to be responsible for planning the November 22, 1963 assassination of President John
F. Kennedy. Whether that is true or not, it is certainly true that the CIA was involved in a complicated ruse to promote various conspiracy theories regarding the assassination.
Helms was characterized by a strong personality and a sense of assuredness. He was well spoken and knew how to effectively interact
with people. Helms also had a darker side, however. During his career he was involved in more than one activity that was morally and legally questionable. Interestingly,
