representative democracy of the United States. In this form of government individuals are elected by their fellow citizens to serve in the passage of laws and other governmental matters.
Our government operates under the premise of Separation of Powers. These powers are separated between the three branches of government: legislative, executive and judicial. The judicial
branch is composed of the Supreme Court while the executive branch encompasses the office of the President of the United States. The legislative branch, of course, is comprised of
Congress. The House of Representatives and the Senate form our Congress. While Congress passes laws, the executive division enforces those laws and the judicial division interprets them and
reviews their Constitutional legality (Tannahill and Bedichek, 1991). While each of these branches provide a fascinating cross section of our government, the purpose of this paper is to explore
the Congress more fully. Congress is composed of a diversity of individuals and backgrounds. These individuals interact with the other branches of
government to determine the course of many important governmental functions and, are charged in particular with the passage of laws. The importance of individuals in Congress can, therefore, never
be underestimated. The necessity thus presents itself that we note the primary players within Congress and gain at least a brief understanding of who they are and what they
stand for. The House of Representatives is composed of 435 members. The Senate, in turn, is comprised of only two senators per
