time period. The following paper examines the 1st Crusade. An Overview of the 1st Crusade "The 1st Crusade (1095 - 1099)
was launched with a fiery speech by the French Clunaic Pope Urban II (1042 - 1088 - 1099) on Nov 27 1095 in a field in Clermont (France)" (Paradox Place,
2009). In this speech he told the listeners that if they would engage in this crusade they would be promised forgiveness of all past and future sins. He also made
it appear as though one could gain fortunes in this crusade which appealed to many individuals. It is also noted that "Men who were accustomed to the obligations incurred by
holding land in return for military service found it easy to imagine themselves the feudatories of an injured God" (Southern, 1953; 54-55). In essence, people were all but obligated to
fight in the system of the continent at the time. Bishop Adhemar of Le Puy became the leader of the crusade as well as the papal legate.
Urbans speech inflamed the Christians as he noted how the Christians in the East were being killed and tortured at the hands of non-believers. He noted,
