Employing energetic, holistic, and philosophical concepts and practices, the Chinese physician is able to maintain or restore the bodys various systems to a balanced condition. Scholars trace the origins of Chinese medicine back at least 4,000 years, making it one of the oldest medical systems in the world. There are two main branches of therapy in the Chinese approach to medicine: herbal therapy, and acupuncture. Herbal formulae of nearly innumerable varieties have been used for thousands of years to cure specific ailments. The famous physician Li Shi-zhen included 1,892 entries in his Pharmacopoeia, and the substances commonly used in treatment include such herbs as Ephedra (from which the western medical drug ephedrine is derived). Acupuncture has gained wide respect in the West since its introduction after Ex-President Nixons visit to China in 1972. This treatment stimulates a series of energy paths or meridians that are believed to run through the body. Stimulation of particular points along the meridians releases blockages in the bodys energy, and encourages a return to homeostasis or balance -- a goal of both Western and Oriental medicine. The fundamentals of Chinese medicine were laid down almost ten thousand years ago by Chang Chung-King (the Hippocrates of Chinese medicine), in his Summaries of Household Remedies and Treatise on Febrile Diseases. Even older is the Net Ching, or the Classic of Internal Medicine attributed to the Yellow Emperor California Journal of Oriental Medicine, 2001, Review of Traditional Chinese Medicine-Discussion Paper, 2001and Towards a Safer Choice, 2001).
