Japanese rule in 1905 and then again formally in 1910 ("Political," 2000). Japans colonial rule tried to wipe out Korean identity with the imposition of Japanese religion, language and names
under the slogan Nissen Ittai which translates to Japan and Korea as One (2000). Clearly, the Japanese held tight to its conquest for a time. Yet, the end
of World War II saw a U.S. proposal to use the 38th parallel as a temporary dividing line which would accept the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea
(2000). The division hardened into two separate states and in 1948 the Republic of Korea which is also known as South Korea, had been proclaimed (2000).
For much of its history since World War II, South Korea was ruled by a succession of authoritarian regimes, some civilian such as in the case of Syngman Rhee
between 1948-1960 and some military such as in the cases of Park Chung-hee who ruled between 1961 and 1979, and Chun Doo-hwan who ruled in 1980 and would finish
his reign in 1988 ("Political," 2000). Roh Tae-woo who took charge in 1989 through 1993 had been the military nominee of his predecessor, but he had also been elected president
in 1988 in a fair and free election (2000). South Korea would in fact pass a milestone in its political history when Roh Tae-woo handed over power in 1993
to an elected civilian successor by the name of Kim Young-sam, after a clean election in 1992 (2000). The election of Kim Dae-jung to the presidency was
an even bigger milestone in 1997, as it was one of the most peaceful, open and least expensive elections in South Koreas history ("Political," 2000). It seems
