this prominent American City. Yet, while San Diego is well known, it is not a huge city. Certainly, it is not as large or prominent as New York, but it
is not a small city either. Just how does San Diego compare to other American cities? What has been its history and what kind of city is it today? San
Diego has mild weather and sun and sand and surf. That is of course typical of many California spots as well as locations in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and many
other states that claim the ocean as a border. San Diego is in fact a favorite spot for vacationers with its Old Town, museums, beaches and famous zoo. San Diego
has had a unique history too. Its roots can be traced back to September 28, 1542 when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed a ship from Mexico into San Diego Bay
("San Diego," 2003). He would come ashore and name the area San Miguel, declaring it a possession for Spain (2003). Cabrillo would die in the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara
not too much later and by that time, the native population of San Diego would include Indian groups with the names Luiseno, Cahuilla, Cupeno, Kumeyaay, and Northern Diegueno (2003).
San Diego had gotten its start a long time ago, like New York City for instance as Manhattan island was first viewed during the 1500s and settlers began to arrive
