a fanatic about putting things in its place. In fact, her friends sometimes drive her crazy by not putting things away just for fun. While it is funny on a
sitcom, many people may not realize that a compulsion to arrange items in perfect symmetry or in a certain order is a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder ("Common," 2001). An
inability to throw anything away is also another common sign (2001). Interestingly, Monica does not have OCD. In fact, many people check the stove before they leave the house. Diagnosis
is more complex and symptoms are marked. Jack Nicholson, who played a character with a severe case of OCD in "As Good As It Gets" is a better example. In
the film, he was so obsessed about germs, he brought plastic ware to a diner everyday instead of using ordinary utensils. Sufferers of
obsessive-compulsive disorder make up about 2% ("The Week," 1992, p.24) of populations throughout the world. It also affects 1% ("Treating," 1994, p. 7) of children and adolescents. Scientists
had long suspected that a major component of the problem is a malfunction in the brains chemistry, and now there is strong evidence to support that concept ("The Week," 1992).
According to researchers, successful behavior- modification therapy coupled with drug treatment have a marked effect on a part of the brain that is associated with the learning habits and routines
