Leukemia is a word used to describe a number of blood cancers, a condition that seems to exacerbate the white blood cell count (Visalli, 1996). Cancer is something that many
fear, and it is common knowledge that leukemia is one of the dreaded forms of what has commonly been referred to as the "C" word. Many have heard of stories
where childhood leukemia is diagnosed. Some of these cancers spread rapidly and while there are those cases where children die, there are some forms of the cancer where treatment is
possible and the outlook is good. In 2001, it is estimated that about 31,500 ("Leukemia," 2001, p.6) Americans will develop leukemia and 2,100 ( 2001, p.6) of those patients will
be children. In total, about 21,500 ( 2001, p.6) people will die of the disease in 2001. Leukemia affects all blood cells
in addition to bone marrow; it also affects other blood-producing structures, lymphocytes or white blood cells (Visalli, 1996). Leukemia again is a broad term. There are four broad categories of
Leukemia, but there are subcategories as well. Acute lymphocytic or lymphoblastic leukemia creates a significant increase in abnormal lymph cells which are known as lymphocytes (Visalli, 1996). It occurs most
frequently in children (1996). In 2001, it is estimated that approximately 2,400 (Prescott, 2001, p.PG) children in the United States will present with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (2001). This is
also known to be the most common type of childhood cancer, and while it is not a good diagnosis, the chances for cure are much better than they were
