most famous moments, caught on camera, in WWII. The following paper examines the life and bravery of Michael Strank. An Overview of Hero Michael Strank Michael Strank was born
in 1919 in Czechoslovakia. His family ultimately moved to Pennsylvania. In 1939 he entered into the Marines and was engaged in many different areas of battle, becoming a Sergeant. It
seems that most people truly admired him, and loved him. One author notes that "Mike is the one larger-than-life hero. When old comrades talk to me about Mike they become
young men again...They speak of the strapping man" and claim that their admiration for him was not because of his ability as a killing soldier but because he was an
incredible leader and possessed a "quality of love" (Bradley; Powers, 2000; 48). It was noted that he was a man who enjoyed a good time, drinking and being fun to
be around, but that when the weekend was over he was very dedicated and ultimately "He was widely regarded as one of the best squad leaders in the regiment" (Bradley;
Powers, 2000; 113). His infamy is connected with a battle at Iwo Jima, in Japan, and the raising of a flag there
that would become one of the most famous photos of all time. Prior to this battle, interestingly enough, he was offered a promotion by a captain and he turned it
