fact, many firearms recovered from Canadian crime scenes were legally owned at one time1 . Legally owned firearms in fact are often found in cases of domestic violence, suicide and
impulsive acts as well2 . Although many illegal guns were once legal, and many of the illegal guns had been made legally, there are manufacturing sites that create the
weapons illegally. In some scenarios, basement machine shops are created for the sole purpose of putting together black-market guns3 . The majority of these are actually poorly manufactured which means
that many are unsafe in any hands4 . Substandard ammunition is something that is known to have been manufactured in basements and garages in order to feed black-market needs5
. Accidental gun deaths seem to rise due to the manufacture of these illicit guns.6 The gun is an important commodity in illegal trade. An important fact, to demonstrate the
impact that gun control has, is that since the latter part of the 1980s, Canada has in fact tightened its control on guns7 . Also, in Canada, gun smuggling has
increased a great deal along with the gun-related crime rate8 . The number of armed robberies has likewise increased 44 % between 1988 and 19939 . The Washington Post notes
that the number of crimes involving guns smuggled from the United States has ballooned from 167 in 1993 to 394 in 1994, and then to 204 during the first half
