common themes throughout works, and much depends on the political mindset and social mores of the day. Works from the sixteenth century will differ widely from writings that come from
the nineteenth century, for example. Eighteenth century novelists have responded, refashioned, and rewrote for one another and ordinarily called upon reader participation in order to elicit connections, and
enter into a dialogue ("Textual," 2002). That is what eighteenth century literature was all about. Antoinette Sol suggests that the triangulation of three writers may be looked at
to discern just how novels participated in the social debate of the day, which was itself centered around sensibility as well as moral authority ("Textual," 2002). During the 1700s,
one has to remember that the world was going through tremendous change. There were new colonies growing in the new world, and old ideas were being questioned by philosophers of
the time period. The Enlightenment era would open up new dawns. Literature would change too. It is helpful to examine periods of literature, even when some would overlap with
other centuries. As time goes on, and the restoration period unfolds, one is met with the likes of Jonathan Swift. He is just one example, but he is still
an example of a writer who characterized a generation. Swifts humor and sarcasm demonstrates that during the eighteenth century, characters take on a new significance. Most remember Swift for his
creation of the Lilliputians in Gullivers Travels. In some way, there is an about face in respect to the emotionality of the hero. In the case of this Swift work,
Gulliver is void of emotion. He is rather objective and not hot tempered or guilt ridden. Some might charge that perhaps Swifts work is not characteristic of the time period.
