results in a crowding that makes the production of healthy blood cells impossible (Bridges and Pearson, 2007). As the crowding of the malignant cells becomes severe, they move into
the bloodstream and into other body organs. Where acute leukemia is characterized by the overcrowding of immature blood cells, chronic leukemia is characterized by the overcrowding of relatively mature
blood cells. Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is one type of chronic leukemia. As the term "chronic" suggests, this type of leukemia progresses slower than acute forms (Mayo Clinic, 2009).
The term "myelogenous", in turn, relates to the type of cells that this type of leukemia affects (Mayo Clinic, 2009). Discussion
Also referred to as chronic myeloid leukemia and chronic granulocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia is a relatively rare form of cancer (Mayo Clinic,
2009). An estimated 4,800 new cases are diagnosed yearly (Mayo Clinic, 2009). CML typically attacks a different segment of the population than does acute forms of leukemia
(Mayo Clinic, 2009). Acute leukemia typically occurs in younger individuals where chronic leukemia is primarily seen among the elderly (Mayo Clinic, 2009). Chronic myelogenous leukemia can, of course,
affect anyone but its more common victims are elderly (Mayo Clinic, 2009). This condition is, in fact, only rarely seen in children (Mayo Clinic, 2009). The
