Mobile computing has only further solidified this trend; millions of individuals now carry small devices with them everywhere which are capable of sending and receiving calls, connecting to the internet, and performing a host of other functions. It is likely no understatement to claim that Apple was responsible for kicking off the "smartphone" boom with their innovative and powerful iPhone. A first in its class, the iPhone offered the ability to download and run customized "apps" which expanded the function of the cellphone in ways hitherto unseen. Over time, however, Apples dominance over that market has waned somewhat. While the iPhone undoubtedly took the retail market by storm, that was not necessarily the case for the iPhone 2 and the iPhone 3G, thanks in large part to the emergence of the Motorola Droid, a phone which utilized Android, a smartphone OS developed by information powerhouse Google. Most analysts believe that Droid has come out on top of the smartphone market, due in large part to their lower cost, their open-source app development environment, and iPhones exclusive contract with AT&T, a phone service carrier believed by many to be subpar to Droids partner, Verizon.
