called "a family disease" but the answer is rather simple. When an alcoholic lives with others, he or she affects their partners, parents and children. The other members of the
family are often embarrassed by the antics that the alcoholic involves himself in. They may become drunk at a party, stopped for driving while intoxicated or under the influence, and
they may even land in jail. One can imagine that having an alcoholic child, parent or spouse can create a situation where the significant other and other family members have
to walk on egg shells. They do not want to upset the balance, or the imbalance, that the alcoholic has caused in the family. Alcoholism is not restricted to
young or middle aged men. There are children who become alcoholic quite early in life and in fact, that is usually the drug of choice for substance abusers who are
beginning to "experiment." Further, alcoholism is problematic among the elderly. Klein & Jess (2002) report on alcohol abuse in nursing homes. Interestingly, alcoholism is often overlooked. Professionals chalk up alcoholic
behavior to being irreversible dementia (2002). On the home front, relatives may similarly think that grandma or grandpa are just old, lethargic, and forgetful. It can be a very serious
problem for the elderly who are often on a smorgasbord of necessary pills to treat a variety of conditions. As many have said, alcoholism does not discriminate by race, age,
or gender. Alcoholism is difficult to define. AA will define almost anyone who thinks they might have a drinking problem as alcoholic. Yet, psychologists will utilized the DSM manuals to
