The 18 students in the classroom included 5 Asians, 5 Armenians, and 8 students from Spanish-speaking countries. During this beginning ESL class, I observed Mrs. Smith using a naturalistic
approach to instruction, supported by small group and paired activities that promoted experiential learning. When I first entered the classroom, I noticed that Mrs. Smith had set up
the room like small caf? tables, each one covered in a table clothe, with a small candle and salt and pepper shakers. There was a menu written on the
chalkboard at the front of the room. As each student entered the room, he or she was given a menu sheet, a list of restaurant and food vocabulary and
a small note pad. Students were initially seated in two groups, one on either side of the room. These groups were asked to spend 15 minutes talking about
vocabulary, including looking at labeled foods, identifying composite foods and food names (e.g. eggs and cheese make an omelet), and practice asking for food and responding to the waitstaff courteously.
In addition, the students were also able to practice giving waitstaff directions about preparation (e.g. I would like a steak, medium rare). During this practice time, students
were encouraged to ask questions about pronunciation and vocabulary meanings. Each of the groups was asked to identify any words that were problematic, that caused confusion (e.g. the word
seat, meaning chair, to be seated, meaning to be given a table, or have a seat, meaning to sit down). Mrs. Smith responded each time with a positive attitude
and thanked the student with the seat example for bringing up a good point. Mrs. Smith then gave half of the room a randomly selected name from the
