(a) Describe in your own words the anatomy of Julias fracture. Commonly
known as the shin bone, the tibia is located in the lower leg. A long bone, the tibia is designed for weight support while the body is standing or
moving (Oriyes-Perez, 2008). It is kinetically related to the knee (Muscolino, 2006). The term diaphysis refers to the shaft of the tibia (Saladin, 2007). Fractures of the
tibia can range considerably in terms of severity. Trafton explains that the degree of bone displacement couples with the severity of the wound to determine how these types of
fractures are classified. He summarizes that bone displacement up to fifty percent is classified as a minor injury and bone displacement between fifty and one-hundred percent is a moderate
injury. Fractures with "significant" displacement are major injuries (Trafton). A fracture such as this is classified as a major injury at anything above one-hundred percent displacement or with
the presence of "only one little comminuted piece or more" (Trafton). Consider as an example a scenario involving a nine year old girl who fell during roller skating.
Her leg is not only tremendously painful but obviously swollen and deformed immediately after the accident.
(b) Identify the sources of pain Julia may be experiencing as a consequence of the fracture.
Julias pain likely is related to the fracture itself and the associated soft tissue damage. In severe cases, however, there can be nerve damage as
