Carson is usually credited as being the first person to sound the alarm about environmental damage; her book Silent Spring shocked readers into an awareness of the dangers of pesticides.
In her essay "The Obligation to Endure," Carson makes many good points, but two in particular stand out. First, our unquestioned use of pesticides has degraded the environment to an
alarming degree; and second, we are trying to force processes in a matter of years that takes nature millennia (Carson). Carson contends that pesticides do significant damage because they are
not used in a targeted manner, but sprayed indiscriminately on everything, even if the target is one or two pests (Carson). When insects are exposed to pesticides, they develop a
resistance to them, meaning that stronger and stronger chemicals are needed (Carson). She argues that we have gotten to the point where, because we spray everything, we also have to
invent new, more powerful chemicals which we also indiscriminately spray on everything, which in turns creates more bugs that are resistant to the new chemicals, which means we need more
powerful ones, on and on in a continuous cycle of destruction (Carson). The final result of this process is a "chemical war" that is "never won, and all life is
caught in its violent crossfire" (Carson 8). Carson also points out that in nature, species evolve over millennia, and that threats to the environment, such as rocks that emit radiation,
are compensated for by nature-but the process takes thousands of years (Carson). In other words, it takes time, "... but in the modern world there is no time" (Carson 6).
